It was a bit chilly in the water today at 45 degrees, but crisp, calm and clear. We’ll return next week, same time, same place. Enjoy.
I know it’s short notice, but Sunday, April 15 we’re having an impromptu first swim of the season at Nantasket Beach starting at 8am from the south eastern most entrance (first entrance on the right as you’re driving in). The water will be cold so come prepared accordingly (wetsuit, gloves, booties, caps, shark fin, goggles, etc.).
We’ll post subsequent swims but it is safe to assume that we’ll have a standing swim every Sunday at 8am.
Enjoy,
Tom
For Saturday March 24 at Noon, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is hosting its Annual Cupid Splash (it would be in Feb. but you get better turnout in March). It’s being held across eight locations along the harbor. The Nantasket Beach Splash will be at the Mary Jeanette Murray Bathhouse and importantly, post-event festivities at Daddy’s Beach Club just down the street. Crusty Barnacles will be meeting at 11:30 AM or earlier and caps will be provided to any new members.
We’ve set a very modest goal of raising $500. To get more info, go to the event homepage and join Team Crusty Barnacles. And remember, the term “Splash” is merely an advisory. Those wanting to swim a bit further are encouraged to do so. Those with Paddle Boards, Longboards, or Kayaks are also encouraged to join in on the fun.
There couldn’t be a better way to give back to the wonderful resource we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to take advantage of.
We’re finally planning the end of the season celebratory get together, two to three months late depending on your inclination for cold waters. We’re also finally updating the blog after an infant-induced three month hiatus. My apologies. The evening will start at Daddy’s Beach Club Saturday Feb 18 at 7:30 PM in Nantasket Beach (http://www.daddysbeachclub.com). See everyone there.
Same time and place for Sunday 11/20 and, due to popular demand, the 1st Annual TurkeySplash (Swimming equivalent of the TurkeyTrot) on Thurs., 11/24 pending safe water conditions. Water temps are dropping so wetsuits and extra caps are advised. Hot coffee will be served both days. See you then…
Our very own Vic Lanzilotti and The Gratefuls will be playing live Sat. Nov 12 from the CNote. Complete invite is below. If you have not seen this group perform, it’s highly recommended and if you have, more needn’t be said.
For those who can turn around quickly and make it back to Nantasket that next morning, there is at least one more swim of the season (hopefully more) starting at 8:00 from the usual spot. Coffee and other treats to be provided.

Crusty Barnacles have officially gone global and done so emphatically – not just swimming 2.5 miles in presumably death-defying waters of the Caribbean, but shattering the all-time world record, by 13 min 35 seconds, for covering the distance from Green Island off the coast of Antigua to the mainland in 44:25. Congratulate Steve not only on this feat but on his wedding. Rumor has it some swimmers are already planning to attempt this very same crossing very soon in hopes of toppling the record…
And if you don’t think you can make the trip to Antigua in the next few weeks, an equally entertaining alternative is to come out and hear the Gratefuls play live from the CNote at Nantasket Beach in Hull on Sat. Nov 12 starting at 8pm. More on this shortly…
We’ll be meeting Sunday at 8am at Nantasket Beach. The water is getting cooler, now in the 50s, so plan accordingly. If the conditions are calm as forecasted, and because we’ll be close to high tide at this time, we can consider swimming south toward Black Rock or one of the nearer beaches (we’ll leave this as a swim-time decision). As always, we welcome new swimmers and we’ll be offering hot coffee afterward to warm everyone up. Start thinking now about your swim costume for the Halloween swim. Enjoy…
It’s come to our attention we have quite the celebrity swimmer who has joined us for the Fall swimming season. He’s been spotted around the South Shore, as captured in these photos by our own Chris Kennedy. He’s providing swim clinics for the next few weeks before getting back into training for the Gourd Olympics, London, 2012.
